A U.S. executive order has renamed “Artificial Intelligence” as “Super Intelligence”. Days earlier, following the UN announcement, Dr. Ghazanfar Latif published an editorial in Inspire Intelligence journal asking a simple question: is this change about semantics, science, or strategy?
Key arguments of the editorial:
- Origin versus rank. “Artificial” was never about being fake; it described something made by human skill. “Super” changes the claim from origin to rank.
- Today’s AI is jagged. In the research literature, superintelligence refers to systems that far exceed human performance across virtually all cognitive domains. Today’s AI is powerful but uneven: superhuman on some benchmarks, unreliable on others.
- Labels shape debate. A near-identical label for present-day systems can blur important debates about safety, regulation, and public trust.
- Defense is where it matters most. Trust in a system must follow evaluation, not branding.
